The gecko and Audi quattro: What do they have in common?

If you’ve visited Prestige Imports in Denver, own an Audi, or just happen to be an Audi enthusiast, then you most likely have seen the silhouette of a lizard adorning the German manufacturers’ recently released vehicles. Likewise, you may have also noticed Audi lizard merchandise (e.g. air fresheners and key chains) in our Parts Boutique.

The Audi Gecko Logo

Well, that’s not just any Audi lizard; it is, in fact, an Audi gecko. Since the gecko, over the course of the past decade, has become synonymous in popular American culture with GEICO’s advertising campaigns, one can easily be forgiven for mistaking this little reptile as a tie-in with the automotive insurance company.

In all reality, the Audi gecko shares no connection with the GEICO gecko. Rather, the Audi gecko symbolizes Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system; and the company first debuted the reptile as part of their all-wheel drive system’s twenty-fifth anniversary campaign in 2005.

But why, you may ask, did the company choose a gecko to symbolize the quattro system? The decision to use the gecko as an emblem stems from one of the its many curious traits: the gecko’s uncanny ability for its feet to adhere to nearly any surface.

According to Wikipedia, the gecko’s feet consist of “microscopic hairs, or seta (pl. setae), that increase the Van der Waals forces between [them] and [a] surface.” For those of us who are not scientists, Van Der Waals force is the “attraction and repulsion between atoms, molecules, and surfaces.” As such, the gecko can “stick” to darn near anything, allowing it to climb walls and trees. Heck, geckos can even walk inverted on ceilings!

Audi’s quattro All-Wheel Drive System

Audi bills it’s quattro system as “all-wheel drive…with legendary grip and available torque vectoring technology” that “significantly enhances handling and cornering performance.” The “legendary grip,” then, finds its adhesive equivalent in the natural world with the gecko’s setae-covered feet.

As previously mentioned, Audi rolled out the first gecko emblem for the twenty-fifth anniversary of their quattro system in 2005 (picture below).
25th Anniversary Audi Gecko
But five years later and in conjunction with the German marketing agency thjnk, Audi revamped the gecko image in order for it to look, well, more “bionic” or futuristic (click on image for a more detailed view):
30th Anniversary Audi Gecko
The accompanying text in the lower left-hand corner boasts that the “NEW HIGH-TECH GECKO,” which was created “entirely in 3D graphics,” acts as the “ new symbol for perfect electromechanics” that can be found in the quattro system.

Additional print ads from the campaign, as seen below, state that, in fact, the “electromechanics” of the new quattro system are actually two subsystems that work in concert with one another in order to provide superior functionality: a “mechanical crown-gear center differential” and “selective electronic torque vectoring.” (Again, click images for larger views.)

30th Anniversary Audi Gecko

30th Anniversary Audi Gecko

30th Anniversary Audi Gecko

Not only did Audi promote the quattro-gecko connection in print ads, but they developed “Perfect Grip” television spots:

Apparently, Audi even commissioned the creation of an interactive video game for PlayStation that allowed users to guide an Audi gecko through a tunnel while accruing points:

Of course, the multimedia, gecko-based campaign looks slick, but it glosses over some relatively basic questions, such as: What’s a mechanical crown-gear center differential? What’s selective electronic torque vectoring? And how, exactly, is Audi quattro different from any other four- or all-wheel drive system?

All of these are fair questions and, indeed, should be answered. As someone who was also unfamiliar with these terms, I found the below video to be extremely informative:

Around the 1:00 mark, the video visualizes a crown-gear center differential diagram. It is, in brief, a series of gears mounted underneath the front half of the vehicle. These gears turn in opposite directions, manually correcting one another when one spins at an incompatible rate. In other words, it immediately redistributes drive force from one axle to the other when one axle spins at too fast a rate or with too much power.

At approximately the 4:05 the mark, the voice over explains the concept of electronic torque vectoring. As described in the video, this component of the quattro system electronically registers the amount of torque distributed to each wheel while cornering, then immediately redistributes that torque as necessary. To do so, it monitors the driver’s acceleration and steering patterns and adjusts torque levels with no lag time.

So what makes Audi quattro different from other four- and all-wheel drive systems? Alex Ingram, in his carwow article “Audi’s quattro System Explained,” writes the following:

For quattro, Audi’s engineers aimed to build an all-wheel drive sports car without the need for a traditional transfer box, as used in many traditional off roaders. They’re bulky and add significant weight—hardly ideal in a motorsport application. Audi’s system makes use of a center differential.

A differential is a component which allows the engine’s torque to be divided between driven wheels even if they are rotating at different speeds. Ordinarily, one will be mounted on each driven axle, but quattro makes use of one to separate torque between front and rear wheels too. Mounted within the gearbox, it connects the two axles when slip is detected, allowing an infinitely variable split of torque depending on road conditions. Compared to a traditional transfer box, this system is much lighter and more efficient.

Ingram, then, continues his article with an explanation of how of engineers at Audi tweaked the quattro system to account for their mid-mounted (i.e. the R8) and transverse-engined (e.g A3 and TT) vehicles.

Most of Ingram’s article, though, focuses on the technical aspects of the quattro system, shying away from the historical aspects of Audi’s innovation. Luckily, /DRIVE produced some wonderfully informative “/Inside quattro” videos featuring the Quattro (Audi’s all-wheel drive model) and quattro system.

The first video provides a truncated, but interesting overview of the quattro system with some vintage footage of an original Quattro speeding around a motocross circuit:

The second, much longer video offers more vintage footage of the original Audi Quattro in rally races. More importantly, though, the clip contains an extended interview with Audi Historian Thomas Erdmann. At the 3:28 mark (and concluding around the 6:35 mark), Erdmann discusses the history of the Quattro, the quattro system, and its relationship to the Audi brand. Check it out below:

Erdmann mentions that Audi first developed the quattro system when engineers were “test driving a four-wheel drive, off-road car for the German army.” He goes on to say that:

one of the test engineers drove [the] car in Finland in the deepest winter. Lots of snow. And managed to be much faster than all the other Audis that were also test-driven at the same time. Then he thought: “Well, why not put a four-wheel drive into our cars?”

And, with that, Audi’s quattro system was born. For the Quattro’s thirty-fifth anniversary in 2015, Audi produced a series of short films celebrating their innovation. One of the clips, titled “The Inspiration,” shows the original military vehicle and Quattro side-by-side:

If that’s not enough history for you, then, check out this additional piece of Quattro/quattro history. In the below video, Audi driver Hannu Mikkola tells the story of his victory at the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland during 1983:

Here at Prestige Imports, we’re lucky enough to own a 1984 Audi Quattro Coupe, which we usually show off at dealership events. Most recent, it made an appearance at our Winter Ice Driving Event. Check out a couple of the pictures below:

Audi Q5 vs BMW X3 - How do they stack up against each other?

Making the jump from a safe economical car to a compact SUV is both practical and exciting.

On one hand, compact sport utility vehicles comfortably carry more passengers and plenty of cargo. They’re also generally safer and their once-notorious gas mileage has greatly improved.

On the other hand, if you’re used to Subarus, Nissans, or Toyotas, the jump to luxury can be exciting.

There are lots of options clamoring for your attention, though. In particular, you may be wondering about one particular matchup: Audi Q5 vs BMW X3?

They’re both popular models and we’re going to get down to the pros and cons here today.

Why a Compact Luxury SUV?

Before we get into the details of different models, let’s consider why you would want this type of car to begin with .

As stated above, SUVs in and of themselves provide a lot of practical advantages.

They’re comfy, roomy, and prove themselves to be capable of rougher terrain. In particular, if you’re prone to driving rough mountain roads or over ice and snow, such as in Colorado, an SUV might be a perfect choice.

Compact SUVs, though, still retain that smaller, sleek, and sporty feel that many larger SUVs simply lack.

Regular SUVs can be like driving a tank (if that’s your thing), but a compact SUV can provide that sporty sedan feel that BMW and Audi owners clamor for.

A compact SUV can make for a much easier transition overall.

Finally, going luxury is a no-brainer.

While not a necessity, stepping into the supple, decked-out interior of a proper luxury SUV is a rewarding experience.

When you go to get coffee, is a latte necessary over a plain cup of joe? No. You just need caffeine.

When you go shirt shopping, is two-ply combed cotton necessary over any run-of-the-mill shirt choice? No. You just need to be clothed.

Luxury cars are similar. Life is short, and there’s no reason not to treat yourself once in a while when you’ve earned it.

Head-to-Head: Audi Q5 vs BMW X3

The Audi Q5 compared to BMW X3 is a lot like comparing an Audi A6 and a BMW 5 Series.

They’re pretty similar when it comes down to it, and you can’t really go wrong with either. Yet, there are small differences that could mean the world to you.

The devil’s in the details, and we aim to find those details for you.

So let’s take a closer look at these two top SUVs and help make the choice easier for you.

Budget and Price

The bottom-line price is what most people are interested in. Everyone wants the best toys, performance, and so on, but we also need to know what we’re getting ourselves into.

According to BMW, the base model of the X3 has an MSRP of $41,000. Unfortunately, this price is for the rear wheel drive version of the X3. If you live somewhere with snow, like Denver, you’ll need to pony up an additional $1650 for the xDrive version.

According to Audi, the base model of the Q5 has an MSRP of $41,500 and comes standard with quattro all-wheel drive.

Obviously, these prices may not be what you’ll spend, depending on upgrades and options, or buying used, or special manufacturer incentives.

Although the Audi does come out on top in this category, we’re talking about a pretty minimal difference. $1150 on a $40,000+ MSRP is insignificant when you’re talking about a long-term purchase.

Fuel Economy

If you’re coming from wallet friendly sedan, such as a Honda Civic or a Ford Fusion, fuel economy might be one of your considerations. But keep in mind, you’re upgrading. It may be time to put some budgetary constraints on the back burner.

Still, old habits die hard, and fuel economy is an important aspect to keep in mind, regardless of whether you’re moving up in the world or not.

Here’s a quick breakdown . . .

  • Audi Q5: City: 23mpg, Highway: 27mpg
  • BMW X3: City: 22mpg, Highway: 29mpg

The above stats are according to Kelly Blue Blook, and your personal mileage ultimately hinges on variables like your driving tendencies and your regional roads.

Still, these two vehicles are clearly neck-and-neck, and with a combined 25mpg for both, the options aren’t exactly narrowing so far.

Power Behind the Wheel

When looking at the Q5 versus X3 from behind the wheel, technology may be the first thing you notice, but the engine is the first thing you feel.

The Audi Q5 starts with a two-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine boasting an impressive 252 horsepower. Alongside the legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system, the Q5 is able to adapt to changing road conditions on the fly, and it’s grippy on sharp turns.

For Denver drivers this is especially helpful as you’ll face plenty of rocky and icy terrain and inclement weather throughout much of the year.

In fact, with the optional adaptive or air suspension, this car glides over bumps like a cloud. It’s sort of a dream-like feeling overall.

The BMW X3, on the other hand, lacks that comfortable air suspension.

The X3 claims 248 horsepower with its two-liter 30i engine. It’s only slightly less impressive than the Q5’s claim to power.

However, you can upgrade to the M40i. It’s a three-liter, six-cylinder engine that reaches a peak of 355 horsepower.

It will cost a pretty penny, though. In fact, it will cost 1,350,000 pretty pennies (total base price $54,500).

Not to be outdone, Audi offers the SQ5. This upgrade on the standard Q5 provides a turbocharged 354hp 3.0 liter V6 engine at a base price of $54,300.

Exterior Design

“It’s what’s on the inside that counts,” some will say.

While that may very well be true of people, it’s not necessarily true of objects, such as luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5 or BWM X3.

The outside counts for a lot too. As vain as it may sound, you want people to enjoy the look of what you drive as much as you do.

There are enough difficulties in life as it is. If you have something nice like a luxury car, it’s a great way to blow off steam and feel good about something.

The problem with this category, though, is that it’s entirely subjective.

What’s aesthetically pleasing to you may not be to someone else and vice versa.

The Audi Q5 and BMW X3 are both nice looking cars. There isn’t a whole lot to complain about in the first place, but when backed against a wall, our money is on the Q5.

The Q5 has a really sleek design. Its large and angular grille gives it an aggressive look that always seems to rule the roads.

BMW has the signature kidney-shaped “flared nostril” grilles. While that look certainly has its fans, it’s a little more niche.

The look is a bit odd and it’s not going to be for everyone.

The Q5, on the other hand, has a modern and sleek design that looks good while in action no matter what.

Tech and Interior

A fast, powerful, and handsome car is all well and good, but one of the other things you look for in luxury cars is the feel and toys on the inside.

Both the Q5 and X3 have impressive interiors. There’s no denying the build quality and materials of both cars.

You’re not going to find a lot of cheap plastic in either of these cars. Furthermore, the sleek dash and wood and aluminum accents always feel high quality.

That being said, the Audi Q5, compared to the BMW X3, has a more sensible layout. The accents and touches of quality materials simply stand out just ever so slightly more, too.

As far as tech is concerned, it costs an upgrade, but the Audi Q5’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) navigation system has few contenders.

It’s simply a gorgeous digital display for your dash that is both high-tech and efficiently responsive.

Cargo Space and Comfort

Let’s not forget that these cars are not only luxury cars but SUVs as well.

If you’re buying one of these vehicles, chances are that you’re trying to carry a decent amount of luggage, cargo, or passengers.

Both vehicles are five-seaters, so the passenger capacity is the same, but in this category the edge goes to the Audi Q5 due to legroom and a more comfortable middle backseat. The optional choice of having backseats that recline and move back and forth make for a more versatile ride-along experience.

Friends and family will probably feel more comfortable driving along with you in a Q5 than an X3.

The X3 is not uncomfortable by any means, but fitting that fifth passenger into the backseat is going to be a comparative nightmare.

When talking about cargo, both cars offer about the same space size when the back seats are laid down.

There may seem to not be a whole lot of differences there, but the Q5 has the advantage of starting with more cargo space when the back seats are upright.

So, with the Q5, carrying passengers comfortably and more cargo at the same time is an easy win.

Our Final Answer: Audi Q5 or BMW X3?

Short answer? Audi Q5.

Longer answer? It’s tough when considering Audi Q5 vs BMW X3. They’re both good cars, to be honest, and some of the categories are a little more subjective than others.

But it’s not just about a powerful engine, quality materials, or brand new technology. All of these elements need to come together in harmony like a beautiful symphony.

When riding in the Q5, the virtually bumpless suspension, quality materials, intuitive navigation display, and comfortable cargo space make it an easy recommendation. It’s a great all-arounder.

Denver is a hotbed for young professionals moving in to take advantage of our strong job market and growing city. Beautiful weather and accessibility to the outdoors also don’t hurt Denver’s appeal for the younger crowd.

So as young professionals flock and our population swells, so does the number of luxury vehicles on the road. The younger crowd chooses nice cars that can both get them to work and into the outdoors.

In Denver, this means young professionals are choosing the Porsche Macan. The Macan, especially the GTS model, provides the perfect mix of fun driving meets utility vehicle equipped for both the outdoors and the city streets.

Let’s take a more detailed look at exactly why Denver’s young professionals are choosing the Porsche Macan GTS.

The Outdoors

People flock to Denver for our city’s proximity to the outdoors. Though the coveted outdoors aren’t as accessible as some may think. The mountains can be rugged, and not just any vehicle can make it deep into the outdoors, even during the summer.

So when the urge strikes to go camping or hit the slopes, you need a vehicle that can handle the drive. Which, coincidentally covers the first two reasons Denver’s young professionals choose the Porsche Macan GTS.

Camping

Colorado is an endless opportunity for camping enthusiasts. Campsites spot our mountains and back country camping is available throughout the high country. Though, no matter the site, you’ll need to get there first.

The Porsche Macan GTS, despite the GTS in its name, isn’t purely designed for going fast. The versatile crossover vehicle also has ample cabin room for camping gear, and enough ground clearance to make it into the wild.

You won’t want to take the Macan off-roading, but the vehicle is more than suited for getting to the deeper campsites throughout the neighboring mountains.

Skiing

Skiing, like camping, requires leaving the city and driving into the mountains. Though unlike camping, there are no muddy roads dotted with potholes to contend with. Rather, there’s snow and ice.

Denver’s young professionals flock to the mountains during the winter to hit the slopes. Though even the nearest resorts are an hour away, and since you need snow to ski, expect snow on the roads.

The Porsche Macan GTS gets an extra boost in popularity thanks to its winter handling. It wasn’t built specifically for driving in the snow, but it was built to drive well, which translates to good handling under a variety of conditions.

Porsche Macan GTS - Overhead View

Drivability

With good handling comes drivability. This is defined by how well the car corners, how it handles in traffic, how it handles at speed, among other things.

As we mentioned above the Porsche Macan GTS handles well, which translates to excellent drivability. An adaptive suspension and torque-vectoring system allow for stable cornering almost never seen among lesser SUVs.

Commuting through Denver every day means navigating through traffic where getting to your destination means finding gaps and seizing them. Young professionals choose the Macan for its ability to make that rush hour traffic ever so slightly more bearable.

City Driving

City driving is a reality for Denver’s young professionals. Gone are the days of Denver getting praise for its light traffic patterns. The influx of people has brought many good things to Denver, but also traffic.

Sitting in traffic on I-25 or I-70 isn’t an experience we’d wish on anyone. That’s why Denver drivers are turning to the refined luxury of the Macan GTS to make it more pleasant.

Not only is the interior comfortable (and it really, really, is) and the handling great, but the GTS also offers acceleration that’s uncommon for vehicles its size. This makes it an easy chose for an everyday driver.

Porsche Macan GTS - Rear Three Quarter View

Options

The GTS Macan model comes with the extras that are expected at the highest levels of the luxury car market (winter packages, advanced surround sound, etc.). Though it’s some uncommon extras that make the Macan so popular here in Denver.

The Macan can really embraces its outdoorsy side with added roof racks, luggage compartments, bike racks, and car covers (for winter snows). Perfect additions for anyone spending time in the great outdoors.

Suspension and torque management add-ons also let Denverites give their car a performance boost when driving down open highways or on mountain roads.

Power to Spare

With a 360 horsepower 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 engine, the Macan GTS provides more than enough power to zip through city traffic or climb steep mountain roads. In fact, with a 0-60 time of only 5 seconds and a top speed of 159 mph, there aren’t many sport sedans that you won’t be leaving in your rear view.

Automatic Transmission

While it may go without saying, buying a Porsche with an automatic transmission is a wise decision for anyone commuting in Denver. Congestion makes shifting a manual in stop-and-go traffic a less than enjoyable time.

The Porsche Macan GTS comes standard with something much better than an automatic transmission … the 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK). This dual clutch transmission changes gears in a split second with no interruption in the flow of torque to the wheels, delivering a sporty and dynamic driving feel

All-Wheel Drive

The Macan GTS features Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive that makes it perfect for driving both through the outdoors and down snowy city streets.

All-Wheel drive keeps you moving up steep inclines and rocky terrain, while that same traction gives you extra grip and keeps you from sliding down icy city streets. And since Denver snow removal can leave something to be desired,  all-wheel drive becomes extra important from October through April.

Compact (can park on streets easily)

While we are talking about an SUV, the Porsche Macan GTS isn’t some bumbling vehicle suited only for large cargo and moving through suburban parking lots. Rather, the Macan is actually very compact for its class. You won’t need extended mirrors to feel comfortable driving the Macan.

This makes it perfect for the Denver young professional that’s living in an urban neighborhood (Cherry Creek, Wash Park, etc.). The smaller size makes it practical to own an SUV while still reaping the aforementioned benefits.

When we say practical, we’re talking about parking. Denver’s urban neighborhoods usually feature on street parking, cramped lots or alleys (though some do have garages).

The smaller the car, the easier it is to fit into small parking spaces.

Porsche Macan GTS - Interior

It Looks Nice … And That’s an Understatement

So our final section isn’t really about practicality, but young professionals do select cars based on looks. It’s probably not the deciding factor, but it does work in favor of the Porsche Macan GTS. A luxurious interior and sleek exterior make the Macan a real head turner.

Leather interior seating, comfortable seats, classy finishes, and inspiring technology make the Macan the perfect vehicle to say that you care about style but also functionality. Meanwhile, Porsche’s classic design sensibilities paired with modern lines mean that you will have an excellent looking car that blends form with function.

Buying 101

Buying a Porsche Macan GTS comes with all the caveats of buying any other car, plus the added decisions of what options you’ll need to personalize your new Macan. There are many colors, upgrades, and features to choose from.

Often, the most difficult thing to decide is financing. Young professionals often have a variety of considerations when purchasing a new vehicle. Will your new Macan be a company car, a vehicle for your small business, a personal purchase.

At Prestige Imports, Our finance specialists will be able to take you through all the options and make suggestions based on your current situation. Here is a brief overview of a couple of options:

Purchasing

Purchasing your Porsche Macan GTS usually means putting money down upfront and then financing on a monthly basis for the term of the contract. It’s an excellent way to own your own car.

The main benefit of purchasing is the security of owning your own vehicle for years to come. There’s no stress, and often good offers on interest rates and money down. You’re also free to sell the vehicle at any time.

Leasing

Leasing makes sense in several different scenarios. Leases are flexible depending on your needs. They can be short or long-term, high or low-mileage, and can include built-in servicing at mileage intervals.

A short-term lease is great for those who like to drive the newest model year in and year out without having to worry about selling their car. Long-term leases work best for people looking to upgrade a few years in the future and those that put a good deal of miles on their cars (more miles means higher monthly payments).

In many ways, leasing a vehicle makes the whole experience of owning your vehicle more like your Netflix subscription or gym membership. A simple monthly payment that ensures that you will always have a beautiful and up to date vehicle to drive.

Denver Porsche Macan GTS Buying 101

Buying a Porsche in Denver means knowing where to look and knowing who to trust. Not every car dealer looks to match a vehicle to your specific needs.

That’s where we come in. Our experienced sales people are working for your benefit. We’ve been in the business since 1984, and we strive to make sure our customer base grows from personal recommendations.

The best way to get those recommendations? Quality service time and time again. We always make sure you get the car you want and that the experience is so exceptional that you will tell your friends about your Prestige Experience.

So if you’re in the market for a Porsche Macan GTS, or any other Porsche vehicle, get in touch with one of our certified Porsche Brand Ambassadors.

Denver drivers, upgrade your Subaru to a new or used Audi

Denver ranks as America’s 4th city with the highest number of Subarus on the road. To be precise, there are close to 110,000 Subarus running on the roads of Denver.

These staggering numbers of Subarus are justifiable.

One, Subarus are some of the lease expensive all-wheel drive new cars you can buy at the dealership. And among the vehicles in this price range, it is one of the few with impressive quality.

But do you know that buying a new or used Audi over a Subaru is one of the better car investments you can make?

How?

Well, continue reading. We will give you 5 reasons why a new or used Audi is better than your current Subaru.

Why Compare an Audi to a Subaru?

To be fair, let’s turn our focus away from the high-end Audi vehicles like the Q7 and instead, look at the entry and mid-level models.

The 2018 Audi A4 and Subaru WRX for instance, are similar cars in many respects. To start with, they both have 4 cylinder engines. In addition, both of these engines are turbo-charged.

Their performance numbers are similar, though some stark differences can be seen in certain tests.

As a matter of fact, both the Audi A4 and the 2018 Subaru WRX outpaced the Volkswagen Golf R in Motor Trend’s figure 8 test. The WRX did it in 25.7 seconds, while the Audi A4 did it in 25.3 seconds.

But in as much as these cars share some similarities, there are some stark differences between them. These differences are responsible for the different driving experience you’ll get from a new or used Audi compared to a Subaru.

What are they?

Read on to find out.

A New or Used Audi Offers Better Reliability

Consumer Reports did a survey on car reliability, and Audi came out two positions higher than Subaru. The Audi was ranked number 4 out of a possible 27. The Subaru on the other hand, came in at number 6.

Why so?

A couple of factors can make the Subaru less reliable than the Audi. Let’s have a look at the 2018 Audi A4 and the 2018 Subaru WRX for instance.

Cast Iron vs Aluminum Engine Block

The engine in the 2018 A4 is made of cast iron. The WRX, on the other hand, uses aluminum. This is where the problem comes in.

The cast iron engine block in the A4 has a higher thermal resistance. This means that the block doesn’t warp or crack under high temperatures, which is exactly what the WRX’s engine could do.

Thus, the A4’s engine is capable of running at higher temperatures than the WRXs engine, which makes it more reliable in tough driving conditions that push the engine to the limit.

Steel vs Rubber Camshaft Drive Belt

Another notable difference between the Subaru and the Audi is in the camshaft drive belt. The A4 uses a hardened steel chain to drive the camshaft. The Subaru, on the other hand, uses a rubber drive belt.

How does this affect reliability?

Hardened steel chains require almost zero maintenance. But in the case of rubber belts, they require regular replacement. Additionally, if the rubber belt is not changed at the correct time, it can fail and cause catastrophic engine failure if the pistons hit the head of the open valves.

All these differences are notable in most new and pre-owned Audi and Subaru vehicles. Not just the 2018 A4 and WRX.

Audi Vehicles Have Better Fuel Economy and Range

Generally, Audi vehicles have better fuel economy than Subarus, something visible when you compare several new or used Audi and Subaru models.

For instance, the 2018 Audi A4 has an EPA rated 24/33 mpg for city and highway respectively. This is for the 2.0L 252 horsepower 4-cylinder engine with a manual transmission.

If you put in an automatic, this value changes to 23/34 mpg for city and highway respectively.

These two established values are better than that of the 2018 WRX. The WRX’s best fuel economy was rated at 21/27 mpg for city and highway respectively.

This result is reiterated when you compare the 2016 Audi allroad and the 2016 Subaru Outback. The allroad has a rated 24mpg combined fuel economy. The Outback, on the other hand, has a rating of 22mpg combined, for the 3.6L 6cylinder automatic.

But wait, don’t we have a 2.5L 4cylinder 2016 Outback?

Yes, we do. But the problem is, compared to the allroad, it underperforms. The 2.5L 4cylinder only produces 175 horsepower, compared to the allroad’s 220 horsepower. To match the Audi’s performance, you need to step up to the 3.6L engine, which is significantly less efficient than that on the allroad.

Subaru Vehicles Produce More Emissions

Comparing the 2018 Audi S3 and the 2018 Subaru WRX reveals interesting emissions data from EPA.

According to EPA data, the Audi S3 produces 7 tons of carbon (IV) oxide per year. This is compared to WRX’s 7.6 tons. This difference is attributed to the fuel economy values.

The S3 has an EPA rated 25 mpg combined, while the WRX lags in at 23 mpg combined.

Thus, upgrading to a new or used Audi is the better investment if you desire to spend less on gas, and contribute less to global warming.

A New or Used Audi Has a Better Interior Build Quality

Most auto experts agree that Audi never goes wrong with its interior. But that cannot be reiterated for Subaru.

For instance, the 2016 Audi allroad has a lush interior, featuring a mix of wood, aluminum, and leather. Its direct competitor, on the other hand, the 2016 Subaru Outback, has more of a plastic-y look and feel.

The base model allroad is fitted with aluminum interior trim, leather upholstery, eight-way power seats, a panoramic sunroof, power tailgate, split-folding rear seatbacks, 10-speaker audio system, satellite, and Audi’s MMI interface.

On the other hand, the Subaru Outback has no wood, lots of plastic and a few aluminum strips.

But isn’t that justified by the cost margins?

Not exactly.

A new or used Audi will be a couple of thousand more expensive than a Subaru. However, many Colorado drivers will find that the extra costs compared to the highly improved interior and exterior quality is well worth the investment.

A New or Used Audi Has Better Safety and Driver Assist Features

If you are still not convinced on spending more for a good interior, then the safety argument may convince you.

Audi vehicles have more sophisticated safety and driver assist features than Subarus. Let’s relook the 2018 Audi A4 and the 2018 Subaru WRX comparison.

For starters, the 2018 A4 has pretensioners that tighten the seatbelts and reduce slack in case of a collision. On top of this, the system also has force limiters which regulate the pressure the seatbelt applies to the passenger.

This technology is installed in both the front and rear seatbelts. In the WRX, this technology is not present in the rear seatbelts.

Also, the A4 is fitted with pre-crash pretensioners which tighten in case the system predicts an impending collision. This happens right before the collision, in real time. This technology is not present in the Subaru WRX.

In case of a crash, the A4 has Secondary Collision Brake Assist which applies the brakes automatically. Applying the brakes at this point prevents secondary crashes from happening. This, in turn, reduces the severity of the injuries. The WRX also does not have this technology.

Insurance Quotes Are Cheaper for Audis

According to research, the Subaru WRX AWD is one of the most expensive cars to insure right now. The 2018 Subaru WRX costs $870 more to insure than the 2018 Audi A4. This is over a period of five years.

According to the insurance company research, the WRX is classified as more of a sporty vehicle, which insurers tend to believe can easily get involved in a crash. This raises its insurance quote.

On the other hand, lots of new or used Audi vehicles fall into the luxury sedan segment. Thus, insurers tend to believe they are not driven fast and dangerously. As a result, the insurance quote is significantly lower.

August Horch, one of the founders of the original enterprises from which Audi developed gave his name to the company. “Horch” means “listen” in German and this was translated into Latin for “listen” which is “Audi”. The Audi designers have been listening to customers who want practicality and quality.

A 2018 Audi may be just the car for you. If you want to step up to a luxurious car that is still affordable, consider the 2018 Audi A3 2.0T Premium.

Read on to discover why you need the new 2018 Audi A3 2.0T Premium.

Why a 2018 Audi?

The Audi name has been associated with quality and innovation since their success in rallying in the 1980’s. The Audi quattro was a turbocharged coup? with all-wheel drive. This innovative car not only brought rallying success but also established the reputation of Audi for innovative technology.

Audi’s corporate slogan in Europe is “Vorsprung durch Technik” which means “Progress through Technology”. Audi has been a leader in technological developments including turbo charged engines and multi-tronic continuously variable transmission. Expect them to be in the game when you start to see autonomous cars on public roads.

Brand loyalty among Audi owners is very high. They achieved the top spot in the J.D. Power 2016 awards for customer service.

2018 Audi A3 - Cockpit

Audi A3 2.0T Premium Overview

The A3 is Audi’s entry-level vehicle. It’s available in various models including a convertible and Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid as well as a sedan. I’m focusing on the sedan 2.0T Premium in this review.

The A3 is one of the best cars in its class. It compares very favorably with the BMW 2 Series and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. This is a prestigious car to drive.

You get all the Audi quality you expect from the bigger cars in the Audi range but in a compact package. Think, build quality meets smart design.

Engine Options

You might think that a small Audi would be scaled down in the engine compartment too. Not so. The front wheel drive 2.0-liter version is a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine delivering 186 horsepower.

It has a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Audi S-Tronic gearbox combines some characteristics of a manual transmission with the comfort and ease of an automatic. Don’t be confused by this, it will feel just like a really smooth automatic.

The quattro version boasts all-wheel-drive and 220-hp turbocharged engine delivering 258 lb-ft torque.

The A3’s smaller size and weight saving construction, including an aluminum sub-frame, mean these powerful engines have less work to do. The quattro achieves an impressive 5.8 seconds 0-60 acceleration. You won’t be far behind in the standard engine.

Specifications

The Premium version of the A3 is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels. Xenon headlights with Audi’s now familiar LED daytime running lights and taillights will make you extremely visible. And there are even rain-sensing wipers and heated mirrors.

The inside is equally well appointed. A panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, power adjustable driver’s seat and dual-zone climate control mean you will be riding in luxurious comfort. Leather surfaces on the seats is a nice touch of luxury and style.

Front and rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera give urban dwellers maximum control when maneuvering in confined spaces.

Options

There are a couple of optional packages with the 2018 Audi A3. The “convenience” package and the “sport” package.

The “convenience” package includes Audi advanced key – keyless engine start and stop, door entry and trunk access, Audi smartphone interface for Android and Apple, and interior lighting is also enhanced with this package.

The “sport” package includes an upgrade to a three-spoke flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel with shift paddles, Audi drive select that optimizes steering effort, shift points and throttle map, sport front seats with extendable thigh support, and upgraded sport suspension.

2018 Audi A3 - headlight

Safety

Safety is important for all car owners. Understandably if you have a family you may trade up looking for more safety from your car. The 2018 Audi A3 includes knee airbags for driver and front passenger as well as front head/thorax side airbags.

The central locking unlocks if the airbags deploy and the system detects the presence of a front seat passenger.

Anti-lock braking and brake assist together with electronic stability control and secondary collision braking mean this car is strong on safety specifications.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has given the car a five-star rating.

Driver and Passenger Experience

You would expect a small sedan to be small inside. The 8-way adjustable driving seat and tilt and telescopic steering column mean it’s easy to get a comfortable driving position for most people. In fact, the comfort level feels like a much larger sedan.

As you would expect, the space restriction has to come somewhere and that is in the back. Smaller passengers will be fine but big and tall riders may prefer the front seats. There is space for three small people in the back.

Acceleration is impressive. The 2018 Audi A3 does feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in a relatively small and lightweight package.

Braking is consistent and responsive. The steering is light and precise making maneuvering easy. The handling is good at speed too, with the suspension reacting well to bends in the road.

If you go for the quattro all wheel drive version then expect the good handling to get even better. There is strong road holding and steering feels even more positive. The car simply goes where you point it.

Noise levels and vibration are as you would expect from quality German engineering. They are low and unobtrusive.

Forward vision is unhindered as the roof pillars are narrow. This good visibility applies to the back and sides too.

2018 Audi A3 - Rear Seats

Interior

Audi’s design character is tastefully simple with few flourishes. An aluminum feature here and there is subtle and stylish. Build quality is solid.

The controls are easy to find and reach and the user interface is intuitive. The multimedia controller is a central screen in the middle of the dash. It’s easy to use and view.

The textured surfaces have an upmarket look, and more importantly, a quality feel. It’s not rattly or finicky. Switches and knobs click properly.

Don’t expect much in the way of trunk space. A compromise has to be found somewhere and it’s here in the load carrying department. If you need to check this the cargo volume is 12.3 cu ft.

The cargo space may not be a problem for you. If you are able, folding down the split rear seats provides a lot of additional storage capacity.

Economy

The 2018 Audi A3 2.0T Premium uses regular fuel. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates are 26 mpg for city driving, 35 mpg for highway driving and 29 mpg for combined driving. That’s better than a BMW 3 series.

Entertainment

Nine speakers should be enough for anyone. A CD player, MP3 playback facility and all the Bluetooth you could wish for. The 2018 model now has 2 USB ports for charging and linking up your USB devices.

The latest in-car radio technologies are supplied. HD Radio Technology and Satellite Radio capability (requires a subscription) are standard.

Who Is the 2018 Audi A3 2.0t Premium For?

The 2018 Audi A3 may be an attractive car for many people.

It is a great car for a single person or a couple wanting to have an affordable entry to the quality German automotive world. It has a larger sedan feel in a compact and therefore economical size.

If this is you, then you are also going to get a great driving experience. The engine and weight ratio make this a punchy car to drive. The quality engineering makes the ride stable and positive too.

If you need some luggage space occasionally you can use the rear seat space.

It works for the new family too. The compact size may mean you can’t comfortably carry three larger adults but it is more than fine for a couple of kids. The quality and safety aspects are also attractive for this type of owner.

Also, it is a great sporty option for those empty nesters’ who are looking to take advantage of their new found freedom.

As your family grows, or you need to transport bikes, boats, camping gear and more family fun stuff, you will want to trade up to an A4.

2018 Audi A3 - Tail Light

Highly Recommended

Audi has won accolades from many quarters for their technical innovation, rallying achievements and customer service.

A recent award that may interest the savvy 2018 Audi A3 observer is this one. The 2018 Audi A3 has been awarded “Best Luxury Small Car for the Money” by U.S. News & World Report in February 2018.

Ready to Buy?

A thorough review of the 2018 Audi A3 2.0T Premium is a good place to start your research before buying a car, but you can’t complete your research without experiencing the car for yourself.

Look at the sharp styling from all angles. Try sitting in all the seats and especially the driver’s seat. Appreciate the slightly austere German interior with just the right amount of shiny aluminum.

Drive the car in all road conditions including the city and an open road. The performance and responsiveness you get from this small car makes driving it a pleasure and not just practical.

Stop by Prestige Imports to take the 2018 Audi A3 for a spin today.

The number-one selling Porsche is back, revamped and recently released. That’s right: it’s the 2018 Porsche Macan.

With so much hype about the car, many people are questioning if it’s worth the gossip.

Let’s just say, there’s a reason for all the buzz.

Should you invest? Is it really worth the cost?

Read all about the 2018 Porsche Macan here and decide for yourself.

What Is It?

It’s secretly a spaceship.

Okay, maybe we’re exaggerating… a little.

The Porsche Macan is a luxury crossover SUV. The line came into existence in 2013, and since then it’s been booming.

There are many variants of the Macan, and Porsche is already working on another model estimated to be released in 2022.

Why Should I Buy a 2018 Porsche Macan?

Oh, we’re so glad you asked.

Besides the fact that it’s basically, uh, a Porsche crossover, we have tons of reasons you should purchase the 2018 Macan.

2018 Porsche Macan - Acceleration

1. Acceleration

The base SUV of the 2018 model jumps from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a little over 6 seconds. With 252 horsepower and a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine, that’s not too bad for an entry-level vehicle.

The higher end GTS model boasts 360 horsepower and can reach 60 miles per hour in 5 seconds, all helped by its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine.

And then there’s the Macan Turbo, the top of the line Macan variant. In this model, with the SportChrono package, you’ll hit 60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds. Sporting 400 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, this demon has a 3.6 liter, twin-turbo, V-6 engine.

According to New York Daily News’ Warren Clarke, “Porsche may be known for its sports cars, but the Macan proves this brand’s skills easily translate into the decidedly suburban world of crossover SUVs. The Macan comes with an engine range that offers brisk acceleration, and it delivers handling that’s both sporty and refined.”

Porsche knows how to put the “Sport” in Sport Utility Vehicle.

2. Handling

As usual, Porsche provides the 2018 Macan with a spectacular driving experience.

Consumer Reports state, “With handling, acceleration, and braking performance that put most sports sedans to shame, the Macan is easily the most thrilling SUV we’ve tested.”

The automated manual transition switches seamlessly between gears. Self-adjusting multi-mode shocks ensure the ride is smooth as glass.

Even better, jumping from 0 to 60 isn’t like being thrown around in an out-of-control inner-tube; reviews all agree the transition and takeoff are startlingly smooth and easy to handle.

MotorTrend claims that the entire Porsche Macan line provides “one of the best handling crossovers available today” and reviews of the 2018 model have been exceedingly positive.

In summary, you get all the utility of an SUV with the driving experience of a sports car.

2018 Porsche Macan - Riding Experience

3. Riding Experience

Thanks to the active suspension management with the air suspension, drivers and passengers will feel like they are riding on taut silk at any speed.

Turns at high speed are not neck-breaking, partially due to the lower center of gravity on the 2018 Porsche Macan. This particular model is .4 inches closer to the road.

For any science junkies out there, you’ll know that small number can have a huge impact on stability. If you’re not a science person, don’t worry: all will be explained simply.

The center of gravity keeps your car from tipping over. Generally, the lower it is, the more difficult it will be for a vehicle to tip and the less jiggling and bumpiness you’ll have on turns.

What Porche has done is increase that level of stability — and, thus, the riding experience — by the smallest bit, making the 2018 Porsche Macan an even smoother ride.

4. Comfort

An uncomfortable driver’s seat equals an angry driver.

With the 2018 Porsche Macan, you won’t have to worry your bottom.

Porsche provides the company’s superior comfort yet again, with the usual leather seats that are stiff enough to provide support and soft enough to keep you comfy.

Oh, and the driver’s seat comes standard with 8-way power adjustments.

It’s an “all day comfortable” type of seat.

In the front, there is plenty of leg room for any taller drivers or passengers, and (although a tighter fit) the back is by no means uncomfortable for a larger person.

The technological features also take your comfort into consideration. With options such as the lane change assist, lane keep assist, seat heating, seat ventilation, and even steering wheel heating, feel free to customize to your heart’s content.

2018 Porsche Macan - Technology

5. User-Friendly

We all want the buttons (especially that big red one that no one’s supposed to touch), but no driver wants to get lost in the intricacies of his or her vehicle.

That’s why the 2018 Porsche Macan is awesome. Because all the Macan models have a sports mode button.

Press it and your vehicle transforms from a luxurious SUV into a sport tuned performance car.

Driving’s Jil McIntosh writes, “Even when you hit the button to tighten the suspension, and the Macan hunkers down on the asphalt and carves the curves near-flat, there’s none of the kidney-bruising ride you’d expect from something this sporty.”

Besides this fun Macan feature, the touch screen console isn’t overbearing. You’ll have three-zone climate control, auto parking and other features that are easy to find and engage. The display even shows the cabin air circulation.

6. Off-Road Ability

Many testers have been pleasantly surprised with the Macan’s off-road capability.

With one push of a button, the power is split halfway from front to rear, allowing more traction. If the air suspension and Porsche Active Stability Management options are added, you’ll have no trouble on tougher terrain.

Now, you can cruise through those bumpy side roads or dirt trails with ease, and then switch to sport mode when the wheels hit fresh tarmac.

2018 Porsche Macan - Exterior Design

7. Exterior Design

Sure, it’s no Porsche 911, but for a crossover SUV, this thing is sharp.

This latest incarnation doesn’t boast an enormous transformation, but what changes occurred were tasteful. The 2018 design has updated headlights and taillights, a more pronounced air dam and new wheel designs.

Although subtle, the face-lift makes the car even sportier and more aggressive than previous models.

8. Safety

Crash tests have yet to be undergone, but the 2018 Porsche Macan won’t disappoint.

Past Macan models have enjoyed high safety ratings, such as the 2014 Macan, which was given an impressive 5-star rating by Euro NCAP. There’s no reason the 2018 Porsche Macan won’t measure up.

However, there are other features that will make drivers’ lives not just easier, but safer as well.

Most drivers hate parallel parking, but you’ll never have to bat an eye with the parking sensors in the 2018 model. As added options, drivers can also enjoy lane change assist technology and adaptive cruise control.

Even better, if the Porsche Active Safe system is bundled, drivers will have forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking. If you happen to notice a critter on the road or an accident faster than this system, the front brakes have six distance calibers so that stopping has never been quicker.

2018 Porsche Macan - Space

9. Space

With the Macan, sporty vehicles don’t have to only seat two. And grocery bags won’t have to be on the passenger’s lap.

The 2018 Porsche Macan allows 5 individuals to fit comfortably in the crossover. But that’s not the best part.

With 17.7 cubic feet of space in the cargo area, you can easily store that baby stroller or those bags of groceries you just bought and still load the little ones into the back seats. When the seats are pushed down, that space expands to a whopping 53 cubic feet.

No more feeling like multiple peas forced into a small pod.

10. Price

It’s a Porsche.

Like any of the brand-name luxury vehicles, it’s going to be in the upper range of prices. But the Macan is surprisingly affordable when you consider all that you get with even the base model.

You can purchase a new 2018 Macan  starting at $58,669.

However, with everything the Macan has to offer and the success of the previous models, you’re sure to make a wise purchasing decision with this vehicle.

11. It’s a Porche

The company hasn’t been around since 1900 for no reason. It was in that year when Ferdinand Porsche’s work began to attract attention, most notably with his entry of the Lohner Porsche at the Paris World Fair.

Since then, the company has only gained a more and more enthusiastic following, as evidenced by the nationwide network of Porsche clubs.

So if you invest in a 2018 Porsche Macan, you’ll not only be getting a quality vehicle, but the advantages of a trusted automobile company.

Heck, there are even references in pop songs to Porche.

Up for a Test Drive?

If you still have any doubts as to the superiority of the 2018 Porsche Macan, give it a test for yourself.

Simply fill out the form and one of our representatives will contact you to confirm your scheduled appointment. Then you can hit the road to test out the 2018 Macan yourself.

We guarantee you’ll love it.

Denver roads take a beating during the winter months. Snow hits our roads hard, and sometimes it sticks around for an extended period of time. It can occasionally make travel very difficult even for those with all-wheel drive cars.

Many states take a proactive approach to clearing the roads, which includes laying down salt to help melt ice pack that can form from melt and freeze cycles. While Denver doesn’t salt the roads, they do use something else.

And it’s wreaking havoc on the residents’ cars.

Enter magnesium chloride deicer. The deicer derives from magnesium, salt, and “anti-corrosive additives” that all gets sprayed onto the roads in liquid form. It’s a grayish substance (though color can vary) that’s very effective at keeping the roads ice-free.

Unfortunately, it’s also excellent at corroding away precious metals and plastics on your vehicle. This is where the problem begins. Since the substance is liquid (versus salt’s solid crystals) it penetrates nearly every inch of your car’s undercarriage.

So what’s the deal with magnesium chloride deicer and how can you avoid problems? Let’s take a look.

Why Magnesium Chloride?

As we mentioned above, magnesium chloride deicer is very efficient at preventing ice buildup. It keeps our local roads open and ensures everyone gets to work, school, and the great outdoors.

The reasoning behind using the deicer in the first place is its ability to better defrost roads when compared to salt, or nothing at all. In 1996 Colorado first used magnesium chloride on I-70 and saw 46 fewer closures than the previous year.

The liquid form that damages cars is also the most efficient way to keep roads clear. Where salt bounces off the road, magnesium chloride stays put. This means better coverage and more ice melt.

When to comes to clearing roads it does its job and does it well. However, people have made arguments against its safety for both the environment and vehicles.

A few years after its implementation in 1996, Basalt, Aspen, and Summit County all banned magnesium chloride deicer, citing environmental and safety concerns. And while the health and environmental impacts have been largely dis-proven, the corrosive effects on vehicles remain.

The Problem With Magnesium Chloride Deicer

As we mentioned above, magnesium chloride’s downfall is its corrosiveness. It eats through metal and rubber very quickly. This means no vehicle’s exposure to the substance goes without some damage.

This is very important to understand. Axles, wires, nuts, brake systems, ball joints and more can all suffer due to corrosion caused by magnesium chloride. Damage to a corrosion weakened ball joint or axle while driving means you are likely going to be in an accident.

And even if the worst doesn’t occur, undercarriage rust can lead to eventual minor problems like leaking oil pans and exhaust systems. Plus, rust can eat a hole straight through your car’s frame or body panels.

Worst case scenario, a serious accident occurs, and best case you’ll lose resale value on your car. With the number of luxury cars on Denver’s streets, that amounts to a significant monetary loss.

Of course, that loss isn’t set in stone. You can combat much of the damage done by magnesium chloride deicer with a few simple steps. It’s all about knowledge and diligence.

Saving Your Vehicle

Protecting your vehicle from magnesium chloride deicer takes diligence. It’s something that becomes a real pain, but a necessary pain. The thing is, Denver won’t stop using the deicer any time soon.

It’s simply too effective at what it does, and the price is right. We understand this, prioritize human safety, and always appreciate a low price. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in keeping our cars corrosion free.

The Car Wash

First and foremost, a car wash is the first line of defense against magnesium chloride deicer. If you’re only willing to put in the smallest amount of effort, make it a monthly car wash.

Though for those who’re very concerned with keeping their car corrosion free you’ll want to visit the wash during every cold and snowy spell. Corrosion takes time to set in, which works in our favor.

Bring your vehicle to the car wash after every snowy stretch, and twice during longer spells. Colorado’s frequent freezes followed by beautiful, warm, sunny days make it easy to keep up with the washing.

Though before you pick any old wash make sure the business you’re visiting has appropriate undercarriage washing.

Car washes without strong enough or comprehensive enough undercarriage coverage can leave magnesium chloride residue on the bottom of the car. That residue will build up and eventually lead to corrosion.

At-Home Car Wash

While an undercarriage car wash is mandatory to clean your vehicle’s undercarriage you can also help keep the deicer off of your body with an at home car wash. Simply take some warm water, soap, and sponge (or a hose) and wash down your car.

Magnesium chloride deicer doesn’t harm paint, but even the smallest chip in your paint job is all it takes for the liquid to seep beneath the finish and cause real rust damage.

The at-home wash can also supplement trips to the car wash during snowy stretches. Even a good hose spray under the car or on the tires can help wash off some magnesium chloride.

Wax

If washing at home isn’t an option (and it isn’t for many) make sure to either wax your car yourself or opt for the extra car wash coat of wax. The wax helps keep the magnesium chloride deicer from getting into any chips or other dings in your paint job.

Most car wash wax treatments are nominally priced and more than worth the money.

Sealer

Protecting your car from magnesium chloride deicer really starts and stops with the car wash, but there is one other preventive measure that can help save your car from corrosion.

Certain sealants can cover plastic wire-harnesses and other plastic components vulnerable to magnesium chloride’s corrosive effects. Spraying these on before the winter can help prevent damage before it starts.

Bonus Maintenance

Magnesium chloride’s effects aren’t always as obvious as a giant rust spot or failing brake systems. Sometimes, the problems aren’t apparent, or they masquerade as another problem.

Case in point, the check engine light. It comes on for a variety of reasons that usually amount to a nondescript reading that tells us little about the actual problem.

Though if that nondescript reading has something to do with an electrical component it’s possible that magnesium chloride is the culprit.

The corrosive liquid gets into every nook and cranny under the hood which can lead to failing wires. The shorted wires send a code that triggered your check engine light.

Your car probably isn’t dying right away, but rather falling victim to magnesium chloride deicer.

Brake Maintenance

Getting your brakes checked should always rank high on the to-do list. New brakes save lives, not to mention rotors and calipers. Always get your brakes serviced right away after hearing the tell-tale grinding of the brake pads.

While you’re at it, it’s also worth telling the mechanic in question to keep an eye out for corrosion near your brake lines or calipers. The brake system uses pressurized fluid to function and corrosion can cause leaks.

Leaks cause a drop in pressure which hampers your braking distance and eventually causes a total system failure.

Catching the corrosion early means treating the problems before it turns into something more sinister. The last thing you need is a blown brake line during rush hour traffic.

Yearly Tune Ups

Yearly tuneups represent the easiest way to catch corrosion problems before they become too extensive. Plus, they’re a great way to keep your vehicle running smoothly. Always ask your mechanic to check for corrosion during your tune-up.

It helps to schedule theses after the winter, as that’s when the corrosion damage actually occurs. Removing and replacing any damaged parts can ensure your car runs great for the rest of the year.

Searching For Your Own Denver Vehicle

It’s a new variant of luxury compact crossovers, and it’s taking the motor world by storm.

The Audi Q3 2.0T is knocking competing makes and models out of the park with its slick design. The car is almost a mirage of its bigger sister, the Audi Q5, yet concertinas it back into this smaller, lighter version of the Audi SUV range.

Those who have been thinking about becoming part of the Audi family and eyeing up the direct competition (such as the Mazda CX-3, BMW X1 or the Mercedes-Benz GLA) could very well be tipped over the edge by the Audi Q3 2.0T.

With its unique angular grille, its rectangular front headlights and its typically swish interior, this five-seater is ideal for a family car, with that added injection of luxury and style.

Read on to learn exactly why this may very well be the car for you.

Audi’s SUVs – A Family Affair

Many drivers looking to invest in an SUV might be tempted to go for the larger models, such as the aforementioned Q5, or even the Q7. But there’s a trend right now in compact SUV crossovers. And the Q3 has the bona fides to be the poster boy for this style of vehicle.

Compact crossover models offer the benefits, comfort, and security of a larger vehicle but are perhaps more manageable and definitely more economical. The Audi Q3 2.0T comes in at just under 173 inches in length, making it only one foot longer than the Mini Cooper hatchback or the Fiat 500X.

While this may put some off, the way this car is based on its big sisters (Q5 and Q7) means that you won’t feel like you’re driving a more compact car. The Q5 is 10 inches longer and adds a lot more size to your vehicle. This may be an advantage to some, but other could be put off by the Q5’s bigger build, and thus more attracted to the idea of the Q3.

If you’re the kind of person who’s worried about handling a larger SUV, then the Q3 is right up your alley.

Audi Q3 2.0T - Technology

Generation Next – A Small SUV with Big Technology

The latest version of the Q3 features a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder 200 horsepower engine. This comes alongside 207 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The model is gaining much buzz thanks to its comfortable ride. It’s truly a pleasure to drive. These Audi SUVs aren’t generally slated for off road travel and are instead aimed at the urban driver. However, if you’re looking for something with the option to go off the tracks a little, the Q3 is available with Audi’s legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system.

Throw in the car’s rearview camera and parking sensors as well as the automatic park assist and the much-hyped blind spot monitor and there’s a reason the Audi Q3 2.0T rates with top crash test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Audi Q3 2.0T - Design

Taking Shape – Audi’s Legendary Design

The Q3 has been described by many as being ‘neat and tidy’. As mentioned, this comes from the slightly petite adaptation from it’s larger counterparts.

But the Audi Q3 2.0T is also sturdy, strong and safe. Its bodywork and build is hefty and stable, encasing the driver and passengers in what can easily be described as a cocoon of safety.

If comparing it to, for example, the A3 Sportback it gives the riders that added height and visibility, making it feel much more like it belongs in the SUV range (which, of course, it does).

While it sits higher than a standard sedan, it’s a couple of inches closer to the ground than the Q5, so if height is something you’re desperate for, consider this when making your decision.

The aforementioned grille is also lower and frames the front of the Audi Q3 beautifully. It’s smart and commanding, with its sleek, narrow front lights and impressive air intakes.

At the top of the Q3, the roofline slips backward to a wraparound tailgate and LED tail lights. This gives the car an attractive view for those who are following it, especially at night time.

Audi Q3 2.0T - Panoramic Sunroof and Interior

Step Inside the Q3 2.0T Interior

The Audi Q3 2.0T is a car for five. But some argue that it’s a more comfortable experience if there’s just four of you inside.

Because the Q3 is indeed a touch smaller than the Q5 and Q7, knee and headroom is at more of a premium. The front of the car is perfectly roomy, but passengers in the rear might feel a little tighter.

The Audi Q3 2.0T comes with a standard panoramic sunroof which gives the entire cabin a feeling of openness that is refreshing in a vehicle of this size. However, with a slightly smaller rear window the view through the rear view mirror can feel little boxier.

Nonetheless, the interior design is stylish and contemporary. In trademark Audi style, the dash is sleek and black with silver metallic accents. It features large, clear gauges and 7-inch MMI screen.

The MMI controller is fixed on the center console and the screen is bright and includes a high-resolution display. It also offers Google Earth maps as standard.

The winner in the Audi Q3 2.0T really is the person that gets to sit behind the wheel. The driving position is superb. It’s made even better if you opt for the sport seats that are offered as an extra.

In contrast to the rear seating in the Q3, there’s loads of leg room for the driver and nothing to clash with the knee. For those that want to use their Q3 for more than just the daily commute, there are 16.7 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat and if you flip the rear seatbacks down this extends to a mammoth 48.2 cubic feet.

Considering this is a compact crossover, this amount of cargo space is impressive.

Audi Q3 2.0T - Under the hood

Tech Talk – Under the Hood of the Audi Q3 2.0T

Despite the difference in size between the Q3 and its Q5 big sister, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is actually built on the same platform. But there’s one big difference between the two: the engine in the 2018 Q5 has been updated to produce 252 horsepower. This makes it substantially more powerful than the 200 horsepower engine that was in the older Q5 and exists in the current Q3.

Keep in mind, however, The Q3’s 2.0T has a much lighter load to carry. The Q3 weighs in at 3500 pounds and feels nimble and zippy. It’s a car full of beans and energy, able to accelerate from 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds (or 8.2 seconds with all-wheel drive).

There’s a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission that shifts smoothly when accelerating. And although it’s not a car designed for slickness around corners, the Q3 by no means falters here. The electric power steering is lithe and tidy, offering comfortable and steady handling for the driver. As it’s designed to be a city car, it’s ability to take on uneven urban road surfaces is excellent.

The Q3 offers combined fuel mileage of 23 miles per gallon and a “ULEV” emissions rating. With a base model starting at around $32,900 there’s a lot of bang for your buck with the Audi Q3 2.0T.

Denver is a car buyer’s dream. The sun shines year round and even in the winter when we do get snow, it’s usually melted in a few days. Our roads stay clear and plenty drivable year round.

So it’s no wonder Porsche vehicles are everywhere in the Denver area.

They’re the perfect summertime car for an area that seems like it sees summer year round. Fun to drive, good-looking, and when it does snow, all-wheel drive is an option.

Things like all-wheel drive or turbo-charged engines can make all the difference when buying a sports car in the Mile High City. So to help you find the car that’s right for you, we’re bringing you our guide to buying a Porsche in Denver.

Denver Cars 101

There are a few constants that every Denver driver deserves. Things that people tend to overlook in other places that don’t have the same driving climate as Denver. For instance, our highways are wide open and straight.

The speed limits are often 65 mph, and people routinely cruise well past that in the left lane. Plus, with the mountains right next door, there’s ample opportunity to push your car to the limit on some winding roads and switchback turns.

Essentially, you’re better off owning something that’s fun to drive. While Denver traffic inside the city gets hectic, the local highways and mountains offer some fun driving opportunities.

In other words, a Porsche makes an excellent choice. They’re fun to drive, good on gas, and can fit into most budgets.

All-Wheel Drive

As we mentioned above, while Denver is sunny most of the year, it does snow – sometimes a lot. This means buying a Porsche that’s equipped with all-wheel drive.

All-wheel drive allows all four tires to engage at one time. The additional road grip helps with traction during the winter months. For Denver Porsche owners, it’s essential for staying safe during the brief but substantial snowfalls.

Plus, all-wheel drive and its improved road feel make navigating the mountain roads even more fun, if that’s even possible.

Heated Seats and Steering Wheel

While heated seats are commonly included on many car models, heated steering wheels aren’t as common. Again, despite the sunshine, Denver can get cold. Early mornings, late nights, and just the mountains, in general, all bring a chill.

You’ll want to stay as warm as possible in your Porsche, and that means a heated steering wheel and heated seats.

The Porsche models we order generally come with heated seats and newer models have the heated steering wheel available as part of an upgrade package. In fact, most Porsche models offer winter driving packages that include options specifically for that chilly time of the year.

Choosing Your Model

Denver offers hot summers and relatively mild winters. While the above upgrades are great for battling our short bouts with winter, those planning on spending significant time skiing or snowboarding in the mountains should definitely consider Porsche’s more rugged models like the Macan and Cayenne.

Porsche vehicles come in many different shapes and styles … sports cars, sedans, SUVs, roadsters, and even super cars. Each model is best suited depending on your specific needs.

Let’s look at a few in more detail.

Porsche 718 Cayman S

718 Boxster and Cayman

The 718 Boxster is the kind of car that’s best suited for flying down I-25 or winding mountain roads (in the summertime, of course). 718 Boxsters come with a standard folding top perfect for Denver summers. The 718 Cayman, on the other hand, is a stunning coupe that is great to drive on dry roads no matter the time of year.

Both 718 models feature turbo-charged four cylinder engines with the base model hitting 300-hp and a 4.4 second 0-60 time, and 10.6 seconds to 100 mph.

Their sublime handling, small body, and surprisingly quick pickup make them perfect for zipping through traffic. Though you’ll probably want to keep them inside when the weather turns ugly, due to their rear-wheel drive power train.

Low-mileage leases make this car an excellent option for summer driving.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4

911

For those looking for an upgrade to the 718, the 911 may be the perfect choice. Like the 718, it’s not specifically made for winter driving, but zipping through traffic or opening it up on 36 will make any car lover smile.

Staying true to their sports car roots, newer 911s feature a blistering 370 hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter six (with an optional 420 or 450 hp upgrade) that hit a base 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

The 2018 911s come with a standard seven-speed manual transmission (not the best for daily Denver traffic) with optional all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (much better for traffic and winter driving).

While you may want to consider a low-mileage lease and winter storage, many of our customers add a winter wheel and tire package and make this beauty a daily driver.

Porsche Panamera 4S

Porsche Panamera

The Porsche Panamera is a luxury sedan that sets new standards for performance. With available all-wheel drive and up to 550hp the Panamera can easily tackle steep mountain passes, winter or summer.

Porsche Cayenne S

Porsche Cayenne

In Denver, many people are in love with the Porsche Cayenne. The SUV can still offer up to 570hp, meaning you’ll get all the fun of driving a smaller Porsche but with the additional room for ski or camping gear. Added ground clearance also makes the Cayenne an excellent choice for trips off the beaten path.

Porsche Macan S

Macan

Balancing out our list is the Porsche Macan. This compact SUV mixes the handling and speed of a sports car with the space and practicality of an SUV. Like the Cayenne, it’s perfect for everything from heading to the store to camping to commuting.

The Macan sees up to 360 hp, with all-wheel drive and seven-speed automatic transmission coming standard. The middle-tier S model hits 0-60 in 4.7 seconds.

While you’re not setting track records in the Macan, you are driving an SUV that can outperform coupes and sedans from many other manufacturers.

Winter Tires (And a Summer Set)

Another winter option, winter tires are especially important in Colorado. The regular light snow falls and the occasional heavy storms mean Denver residents need to understand that their new Porsche will face snow.

Beyond all-wheel drive, snow tires are critically important to improve traction on any Porsche model.

Increased tread depth and softer rubber compound ensures that your Porsche has more than enough grip to handle the ice and snow. However, snow tires aren’t without their drawbacks. The softer rubber decreases handling on dry roads and will also wear down quickly in hot conditions. So, if you’re using snow tires, you should also own a set of summer tires. This prevents the unnecessary wear and tear on your winter tires, and ensures that you are using the right tools for the job in both winter and summer.

MPG

Denver driving is a unique mix of open roads with high speed limits and city driving. Our main highways (namely I-25 and I-70) often have 65 mph posted speed limits with traffic that often flows much faster.

Though during rush hour you’re likely to hit standstill traffic no matter if you’re on the highway or city streets.

The constant stop-start traffic makes fuel efficiency important. Smaller Porsche vehicles can get anywhere from 25-30 mpg, while larger models like the Cayenne get anywhere from 20-25 mpg.

However, those are newer models. Older cars get don’t do quite as well, though they do cost less to purchase upfront. Depending on your commute you might want to take mpg into consideration.

Used Versus New

The new versus used car debate rages no matter what brand you’re looking at purchasing. It’s no different with Porsche vehicles, which have an excellent used market in the Denver area.

But shopping the used Denver Porsche market takes a few considerations. First, older cars can be more prone to breakdowns. The miles add up and things wear out even on the best-maintained cars.

Plus, as we mentioned above older cars get worse mpg. But it depends on how old we’re talking about. Cars from the past five years or so can come at a significant discount but still offer great value. Especially when you are considering a Porsche Approved certified pre-owned vehicle.

New cars obviously come at a higher upfront cost but have a completely clean bill of health as well the added luxury of customization. Order the exact car you want, right down to the color of the stitching on the seats. You even have the option of European Delivery … pick your car up in Germany and spend some time traversing the scenic byways of the Old World.

There’s an Established Community

Denver Porsche buyers can join the thriving Denver Porsche community. This means you’ll have access to a number of Porsche specific activities, as well as a group of other Porsche enthusiasts from all over the Denver Metro area.
